How to furnish a Dutch rental on a budget
After finding a home, furnishing it can become the next expensive surprise. A simple plan helps you make the place livable first and comfortable later.
Know what is included
Furnished, upholstered, and unfurnished can mean different things in practice. Ask what stays: flooring, curtains, lights, appliances, bed, sofa, table, and kitchenware.
If something is promised, get it in writing or in the move-in report. This prevents confusion when keys are handed over.
Buy essentials before nice-to-haves
Start with sleeping, lighting, cooking, washing, and working. Decorative items can wait until you know how you actually use the space.
Second-hand platforms, local thrift stores, expat groups, and moving sales can reduce costs. Measure doors, stairs, and rooms before buying large furniture.
Plan delivery and disposal
Dutch stairs, narrow streets, and apartment rules can make delivery harder than expected. Check lift access, parking, delivery windows, and whether you need help carrying items.
Also plan what happens when you leave. Cheap furniture is only cheap if you can sell, reuse, donate, or dispose of it without stress.
